Step Up for Hope: Gertrude’s Children’s Hospital Family Walk for Kids with Cancer – March 16, 2025!

Writer: Millennium GlobalMillennium Global

Gertrude’s Children’s Hospital has established a Children’s Cancer Diagnosis and Treatment Center to improve the care of children with cancer across the country. The center’s main objective is to enhance early detection and diagnosis of childhood cancer while providing comprehensive care that leads to better treatment outcomes.

To support this noble cause, the hospital organized the Annual Family Walk to Support Children with Cancer, a meaningful event aimed at raising awareness and ensuring children from poor and vulnerable backgrounds can access timely diagnosis and treatment. This initiative gives these children a fighting chance at life.

The Walk Begins!

The walk took place on March 16th, 2025, beginning at Uhuru Gardens at 7:00 a.m. Participants gathered early for warm-up exercises, where the Gertrude’s team introduced themselves, explained the walk’s purpose, and outlined the different routes—5km and 13km.

A marching band led the way, setting an energetic tone for the day. The 13km walkers followed the band, while the 5km walkers took a separate route.

MGIS Participation

Representing Millennium Global International School (MGIS) were:

5km Walk Participants

Students: Gabriella and Abigail (accompanied by their mum), Zahara, Maya, and Anabel (joined by her dad).

Teachers: Mr. Austine, Mr. Earnest,  Mr. William, Ms.Mercy and I, Miss Stephanie.

13km Walk Participants

Teachers: Miss Doreen and Miss Sharon—who, somewhere around the 10km mark, may have started questioning their life choices!

Post-Walk Activities

By 10:00 a.m., the 5km walkers had completed their route and returned to Uhuru Gardens for fun family activities, including:

Bouncing castles for the kids.

Mr. William’s competitive table tennis match.

A dance competition where kids (and some brave adults) showed off their moves.

Music and food vendors, ensuring there was something for everyone.

Meanwhile, the 13km walkers persevered, finally arriving just before 12:00 noon—some energized, others utterly exhausted! We gathered at the entrance and, with the band leading us once again, marched to the front of the gardens.

Awards & Closing Ceremony

We engaged in some warm-up exercises, followed by the awards ceremony, where medals were presented to the top three participants in the 13km walk. The event wrapped up with music, dancing, and food from various vendors, creating a lively and celebratory atmosphere.

Student Reflections:

The students truly enjoyed the experience! Some shared that it was their first time participating in such a long walk, while others were excited about the sense of purpose and teamwork they felt.

Gabriella mentioned how walking alongside her mom made it even more special.

Maya said she loved the energy of the band.

Zahara and Anabel found the post-walk activities the most fun.

Abigail shared that she now understands the importance of supporting children battling cancer.

Teachers' Remarks:

The teachers also had some thoughts on the event:

Mr. Austine: "It was a great way to promote a healthy lifestyle while supporting a worthy cause. The students did an amazing job!"

Ms. Mercy: "Seeing the kids participate so enthusiastically was heartwarming. It was a reminder that even small acts can make a difference."

Mr. William: "The table tennis match was a highlight for me! But beyond that, it was fulfilling to be part of an event that directly impacts children in need."

Miss Doreen: "The 13km walk was no joke! But knowing we were walking for a good cause made every step worth it."

Miss Sharon: "I may have felt my legs give up at some point, but the joy of crossing the finish line made up for it!"

Miss Stephanie: "The walk was a refreshing and therapeutic experience—an excellent way to unwind while supporting a meaningful cause."

Final Thoughts

This event was more than just a walk—it was a powerful statement of support for children facing cancer. We are deeply honored to have contributed to this cause and commend Gertrude’s Children’s Hospital for their incredible efforts in cancer diagnosis and treatment.

We also extend our sincere gratitude to our MGIS directors for supporting and facilitating our participation.

God bless MGIS!
